Question
hi im a starter in racing pigeons. I have 20 racing  pigeons which are now about 3 months old, every time I let them out they only fly around the loft about   5  mins max then they land on the roof all day and fly every now and then but not for long.
how do I get them to fly around the loft for a long time like other people do.

Whats the reason why they don't fly long enough around the loft, is it because they are still young or am I doing some thing wrong.
or would they eventually do so as they get older or?
my email address is
thanks

Answer
First, I am no expert on racing homers.

Don't let them free fly.  You need to establish a time of day that works for you, and release them at the same time every day.  If these birds are to be trained for distance, the time should be in the morning so they are prepared for race day. Second, don't feed before release; teach them to jump out, fly like mad and then return quick to get their dinner.

The feed-training is an art and a science and there are as many formulas as there are pigeon owners!  For Competition Birmingham Rollers, I used 1 teaspoon of grain mix per day per bird.  This would not be enough for endurance Homers.  Keep your protein rate up around 18-19%.
