Upset Parakeets

Question
I bought my first parakeet (Kiwi) in January of 2010; I hand trained her, held her, did everything to make a parakeet happy. I bought a new big cage in June of 2010 and soon after moving Kiwi into the bigger cage, I thought it would be fun to have another parakeet. Thus, I bought another parakeet (Blueberry) and got the two birds used to one another and put them in the same cage. It's now August, and Kiwi is incredibly agressive towards my family and I whenever we try to handle her. Blueberry is fine though. Not agressive at all, just very shy and unwilling to interact with me. I have Blueberry in the big cage in the living room and Kiwi in her old cage in my room so the two have no interaction. So all in all, I ask:

1.)How do I solve the agression in Kiwi?

2.)How can I make the both of them more trusting of me?

3.)How can I make them happy as can be?

PLEASE HELP! Thank you!!!!

Answer
Hello Madison,

To understand a little bit of a birds physcological processing, they are always flock animals. Have you ever heard the saying "Birds of a feather flock together?". This holds true in most cases. If given the choice to "flock" with completely strange being's (humans) and birds of a feather just like them, they will always choose to flock with the birds, ALWAYS!

So in short, you have done nothing "wrong" that caused this behavior and there are a few things you can do to possibly correct it.

1) Put each bird in a seperate cage and only allow them short physical interactions when you are there to have both of them get your attention. This means you will need a seperate cage, but they can both be in the same room.

2) To have the best success in hand taming a bird, it is always ideal to only have one bird. If you choose to get rid of one bird, remember that they are flock animals and will absolutely need some form of interaction with a substitute, either you or another bird.

Best of luck with your birds!
