Question
Hi!

I just got a 1 month old parakeet from the pet shop maybe 2 or 1 week's ago, and i was wondering why is it always scared everytime i try to go
near it and talk to it, and I sometimes try to let it out of its cage! i mean the bird would try to fly away from me even though the wings are
clip i even try using a perch to get it out by using the step up command, no luck it's just keeps flying in the back to his cage all scared!. Wat should i do?

also when the parakeet bites he does not let go?

i kind of feel like giving up on the bird and giving it back to the
bird shop! i don't know wat to do!

Answer
Hello Peter! new keets can be a bit fusterating esp if they are biting. Pet stores get their keets from large breeders who just breed them for the sake of selling them to the stores. These keets have had no human contact and will be afraid of everything. A baby keet that hasnt had any human contact is of course going to be afraid of you. they dont know if your going to hurt them or not (you know that you would never hurt it but THEY dont relize that). In that case you must gain the trust of your baby keet. Chances that it will be tame are very slim, keets that bite from the start rarley become tame. but thats no reason to give up your keet. Not all birds will be cuddly like a conure. Give your baby some space. Dont let him out of the cage for a couple weeks. Let him get used to you, your voice and your presence first. When going to feed him talk to him softly and do things in the room, like cleaning or working. Dont push it too much, respect your birds space by keeping a distance that you know your bird is comfortable with. Offer millet spray and other treats in the cage. For your keet to trust you it will takes months or years. (i know it seems like a long time) but in the end you will notice that your keet will be happy when you come in the room by yawning or fluffing up its feathers. You may never be able to hold your keet without getting bitten, so dont hold your keet. It sounds mean but theres always a reason why birds bite. If hes biting because he does not want to be held then respect his actions and dont hold him. Single keet breeders like me are hard to find in some areas. If you really want a nice tame bird then another bird might be the best choice for you. It doesnt mean you have to bring your keet back, the birds got a nice home now.. Its not the birds fault because it bites, Its just not used to humans. A cockatiel or tame lovebird would be a good choice. They are more pricey but are lovable and you might find you are happy with another breed of bird. Keep your keet and continue to show affection. Hard work does not go unoticed. dont give up though, show your keet that you are dedicated even if it acts mean twords you.  you can do it! good luck to you and your baby budgie!
