The nesting bird has a near white cere with maybe a tinge of blue beneath the nostrils, while what we think is a male bird, judging from the behavior has a beige look to it.

-----Question-----
I hope you can help me. My budgies have generated many questions. Firstly, is it possible that I have two female birds, one playing a "male role" and the other a more traditional female? Ralph (more female) is sitting on 4 eggs right now. She's been there just over two weeks, and we're hoping for babies any day now, but during these past two weeks Delilah (male?) has been really quiet and just looks depressed. We put vitamins in their food, and there's been a cuttle bone in the cage since we got them. Is Delilah just sad because Ralph is nesting and missing companionship? And is Delilah even male? We saw them mate (on many occasions) and Delilah was always on top. Ralph comes out of the nest occasionaly, but always looks like she's been through a hurricane. Her feathers on her face are all ruffled and it looks like she's got some crusty stuff on the sides of her mouth. Is she okay? How long should we let her sit on her eggs before it's been too long? Is Delilah really male, despite a brownish cere? Thanks
-----Answer-----
hello Sarah! just to make sure, females have deep brown to white ceres and may appear crusty or peeling during the breeding season. Males will have a deep blue cere. The male is always on top of the female when breeding. Just answer me back and then ill answer all your other Q's. ^^

Answer
Hello again! It sounds like you have a pair of birds! the crusty stuff on the side of her mouth is from the birds feeding eachother. The male will always be on top. Even though birds of the same sex can "pretend" to be a pair, mating is not common, courtship and feeding are more common. The eggs will hatch in about 18 days. If the eggs are in there longer than 18 days and have not hatched then remove them and throw them away. The female will sit on the eggs for long periods of time while the male waits outside until the female emerges. The female also will have ruffled feathers because of how she sits on the eggs. Hopefully a little chick will hatch! they will be tiny, blind, deaf, pink, and naked! good luck!
