Male Parakeet hurting eggs and babies

23 9:51:14

Question
Our parakeets are on their second set of babies.  They raised three perfectly.  However, this time the male has started getting in the nest box, which he did not do the first time.  This morning he threw three of the eggs out of the nest box and two of the three babies that have hatched have beak marks on their head, which I suspect the male caused.  What should we do?

Answer
Hello Eric,

You need to remove the male immediately. Parakeets can become aggressive during breeding season. But, sometimes the male will go in the box to help feed the babies, this is unusual but not unheard of. The unusual part is that he is harming the babies. So, with the male gone, this means the female has to work extra hard to feed herself and the babies. The male normally feeds her. You will have to keep a close eye on the bird to make sure she and her babies are all getting fed properly. If something were to occur that the mother is stressed and unable to care for the babies, then you may need to hand raise. So be prepared with hand raising formula...just in case. But as long as there is enough food in the cage and everything is calm and quiet, then the birds should be ok.

Hope this helps!
