Question
QUESTION: We found our female dead this morning.  her first egg was about 10 days ago ..her last 4 days she has had 3. It seem like she was done. The male has been a great dad sitting on the eggs when she took a break. Now he's alone and has been sitting on them. Can he do it. Will he be able to feed the chicks. This is his first time. We believe they are fertile.
Please help us. We love Ferbie(male)and will do whatever is best for him. Yet we would like to see the babys

ANSWER: Hello Patty,

I would be lying if i told you the male is going to be perfectly fine and all the eggs will hatch and the babies will live. It is going to be hard for him. But, that does not mean he cannot do it. If you feed him properly and there is always an overflowing amount of food, he may be able to pull this off. Since he is already sitting on the eggs there is a good chance he will continue to sit on the eggs. If in the event that the male cannot care for the babies you may have to hand raise. So be prepared with hand feeding formula...just in case. But i think if you have a lot of food for him and it is everything is kept calm, he can possibly raise the babies.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: do THE EGGS NEED A INCUBATOR OR CAN WE JUST PUT THEM IN A HEATING PAD....JUST IN CASE THE MALE STOPS SITTING ON THEM.

Answer
Hello Patty,

An incubator would be best so that it is heating all parts of the egg. If you just use a heating pad you would have to turn the eggs every hour or so. The incubator doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something that will keep the eggs warm. If an incubator is not an option, then you could use the heating pad and put a lamp above the eggs that get really hot or a heating lamp. That way you are warming both sides of the egg evenly. But an incubator would be best, only use a heating pad and a heating lamp if you really have to. GOOD LUCK!
