Question -
ok my friends parakeets (one male one female) laid eggs, the mother incubated them, and they hatched but after about a day she died (today), will the father take care of the babies, would another female bird take care of them if he won't? he never laid on the eggs when they were laid, the female did the majority of the work, he just feed her and protected (watched over) the nest box, so she says. please email ASAP. thanks

Answer -
hello gretchen! The father may take care of the babies but another female will kill the babies. another female that has not hatched them herself will even kill the remaining eggs. depending on how old the babies are their survival is very low since the mother does most of the work in the begining. My male keet feeds and helps the mother with all the babies. Some males have the rearing instinct better than others. If you want to hand feed the babies yourself e-mail me back and i will guide you through it. Other wise the babies dont have much of a chance. Fathers rarely raise a whole brood by themselves. :(  try to keep the babies warm (a heat lamp or warmth pad will do) good luck i hope the babies make it!

Answer
hello again! Before you get started know that raising parakeet chicks is very difficult and they may still die, but at least you will have tried something to save the babies. Babies need to be warm at all times. Make sure there are no drafts or loud noise or cold air. Put the chicks in a square shoe box or something of that matter. Put some shavings in the bottom (Parakeets dont use any nesting material when raising chicks). A heat lamp with a night bulb (these bulbs are black that glow blue or purple but provide heat) SInce babies are raised in a dark space until they fly you dont want to use a bright light to disturb them. (these lights can be found in the lizard section of a pet store) The things you will need: hand feeding syringe, formula. Heres a web site to help you because hand feeding are such a compicated process, bahttp://www.cagenbird.com/a04.htmbies
The reading is long but it will give you all the information you need to know :D (it would be hard to sumerize it all up on here) For feeding mix i recdomend kayatee. The babies need to be feed every time their crop gets empty. Once about 2 weeks old they do not have to be fed at night. When traveling carry them in the box with you. Its a hard and annoying process but results can be wonderful. I wish you luck and if you have any more questions or concerns dont hesitate to e-mail back!
