Lady cockateil feather loss

22 18:00:22

Question
Lady cockateil who is about three years old. Laid about 17 eggs in 2005 none of them fertilized, then we treated couple with Vitimin E and S.

This year about in May they laid another 5 eggs out of them 3 hatched to brings three beautifull babies.

But during all this process lady Cockateil lost lots of hairs/feathers, especially under her arms there are no hairs.

She is weak, and every time she comes to me she shows her bare belly/chest and under arms area by spreading her arms.

She is cutee and I wish if I can do something for her to make her healty, strong and full of feathers again.

Please advise if there is any medicine, spray I can use to get her back.

Thanks
Ned

Answer
Hello Ned.  Thank you for your post.

It sounds like Lady Cockatiel might have mites, or an allergic reaction to something in the air.  I would take her into a Certified Avian Vet to rule out mites.  The test is painless to the bird, and it's not very expensive (around $15).
Do you have anything like room fresheners or scented candles in the room that she is in?
Also, cleaning solvents, furniture polish, anything with fumes?  These can be an irritant to her skin.
You can try to mist her down with plain luke warm water, but make sure that the spray bottle that you use has not had anything else in it.  You can also take her into your bathroom, close the door and run the hot water in the shower, but do not put her into the shower.  You just want the steam in the room.  This is very soothing to a bird that has irritated skin.
Make sure that she has a calcium block in her cage too.  She needs the extra calcium.  Avian Vitamins are a good idea also.

Please keep me informed on how she's doing.

Good luck and God Bless.
