Question
QUESTION: i have a very old peach faced love-bird, my dog got in the room with her and managed to remove the nail part of her beak, what can i feed her until it heals?

ANSWER: (followup on bottom of this post) **

Hi there,

Make sure there is no bleeding, or you may need to get the vet to corterise it.

In the mean time, the best thing you can give her is hand rearing formula. Also for a treat, give her what I call bird mash. Its cool, boiled veg with some porridge oats, pearl barley, swede, parsnip, potatoes and carrots in it. Be imaginative with the bird mash, but over cook it rather than under, so its lovely and soft.

Hand feed her if she can't manage it herself.

Hope this helps?

Charlotte

**Hi,

I just read your note about the beak never growing back. I am so sorry to hear this.

May I say, in a few months when her beak has healed properly and there is no sign of infection, perhaps, it may start to grow back. Youll know for sure by the end of the summer. I don't know how far it is broken.  If not, if you have the money, consider giving her a new beak. as far as I understand a false beak, they use a glue rather than pins. The will probably put her under a light anaesthetic so that she doesn't wriggle about while they put it in place, then once it is set, they will smooth it off. She will be asleep the whole time and won't feel a thing. Imagine how happy she will be when she wakes up. If it we me, being how I am with pets, I would have it done.

QUESTION: Hi Charlotte, i just wanted to give you a update on blue bird. she ended up at a avian vet. he used her beak and some glue and re attached her beak($300) she is doing great she is even attacking again she does not like this big itchy thing on her face but it must stay for another month. her real beak is growing back. up by her eyes the beak broke top and bottom so it did no damage to the grow area(yea)she has scratched her beak loose once already($75)I took her cuddle bone away when accident happened Dr. wont let her have it back. any ideas on what i can do to make her itchy more comfortable? fake, bulky, healing beak, itches. She is getting painkillers I don't think she hurts but vet has antiinflamatory in it, and antibiotics with antifungal in them so no problem itching  Thank you for all you have done, I am very grateful for all the help from this page.

Answer
I am so pleased she is doing well.

The irritation will have to stay there until it is all sorted, just as we have to put up with a cast on a broken arm or leg. Check with the vet to see how it will be with water, as a light sprey with some sort of elo vera may help? Check first.

Difference is with a cast on us and her beak, is that she does not understand what it is. Just lots of reassurance and loves will keep her mind on other things.
