Baby Red-Eared Not Eating + Shell Rot

Question
I bought a baby red-eared slider eleven days ago and he hasn't eaten anything. I've tried two different types of turtle food, different veggies, and worms but he wont eat anything. Also I believe he has shell rot. Two of his scutes have white spots on them that are peeling up and in other places it looks like his shell is soft and going to falling apart. I read a book on how to treat it and it said to put a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution on him and triple antibiotics. I did what it said but I think it made him worse.

Answer
Rachelle,   Actually you could have used betadine instead for the antibiotic properties and peroxide dry's things out. It sounds like where ever you got him from or they got him from did not have it under the correct lighting and it never received the ability to create the calcium it needed for the shell to harden. Never put an ointment on him. At this point I am sorry to say he or she is in bad shape. The common myth is that his shell is an exoskeleton and it isn't it is a part of his skeleton. It is his ribs and in the back is part of his invertebral spine. They are hardy as they grow. They are very delicate when they are hatchlings. He or she needs a vet immediately. This is past what we can take care of he may have a systemic infection that may need antibiotic from the DR. Also the shell....I don't know shell reconstruction on a hatchling....I'm sorry. : ( If you have to get ahold of the wildlife center I don't know the laws in your state but if need be take your permit and ask for help. If everything goes o.k Rachelle you get back in touch with me and we will give a perfect habitat. In the meantime make sure is basking area is about 88 degrees and big enough for him or her to dry completely. Very important!!!!!!! Please keep me posted.  Good Luck, Tina
