Feeding red eared slider

Question
A few months ago I got a baby red eared slider turtle.  He's about 2" long.  He's in a 20 gallon tank with a filter, heater, UVB light, and a basking area with a light.  I'm really confused about what to feed him, because every website I've found says different things.  I've been giving him Reptomin turtle sticks, carrots, and beef or chicken every day.  I found some websites that said they shouldn't be given beef or chicken, but others said it's good for them.  I tried giving him other veggies like Romaine lettuce and collard greens but he won't eat them.  I know you can give them guppies, but they're too big for him.  Can you give them mealworms?  I wanted to try giving him live crickets, but one website said you have to break off their legs first because they're hard for turtles to digest, and I don't really want to do that.  At the pet store I saw a box of dead crickets - are they any different from live ones?  What should I be feeding him?

Answer
Hello Gina,

Has the best nutrition information and feeding items.

Mealworms have little ammounts of nutrients and are not really healthy for any animal. They also have a hard outer shell that is hard for reptiles to digest.

Crickets can be fed dead or alive, no need to pull off legs.

It is common, especially in baby turtles that they will not have any interest in greens, fruits, and veggies.  They are mostly carniverous when young.

I hope that helps,

Oh, and congrats on the new turtle.
