Reeves Yearling Flash Penis

Question
Hi, I have a year old Reeves turtle noticed that he's flashing his penis daily.  He is healthy in every way but he's hardly manure. Is it normal behavior?  He is the only one in the tank there isn't even a small fish in it.

Answer
Hi zm,

I'm not well-versed on keeping Reeves, but in general a turtle's maturity is based on size, rather than age.  It would be very unusual for a turtle to reach maturity that quickly, but if you're certain of the age (and equally certain that your turtle is actually flashing), it's a possibility.  A fully mature Reeves might be expected to be about 5" SCL, so I'm guessing flashing could begin at around 3" or thereabouts.  If your turtle is that size, then the flashing is normal.  If he's considerably smaller than that, there may be a problem and I would consider taking him to a vet.  I'm sorry I can't be of more help.  If you're still concerned, I would join this Yahoo group and ask your question there, as there very probably is someone on there who actually keeps Reeves.
