Redfoot Tortoises growth

Question
I have an almost two year old Redfoot Tortoise, and she's nearly six inches, and her parents were rather large. I was wondering when should I except my tortoise to grow the most, and how soon can I figure out the sex? Please and Thank you!

Answer
Hi Skye,

You can usually sex redfoots at about 8" in length.  Males tend to grow at fairly even rates, but females will often have a large growth spurt just before they hit maturity.  When you measure, be sure you're measuring straight down the length of the plastron (bottom shell), and not over the curve of the carapace (top shell).  You will probably be able to sex your tortoise in about another year if she keeps growing at the same pace.
