Question
QUESTION: Firstly, I wish to ask, is there any difference between "yellow bellied turtles" and "yellow bellied sliders"? Because the man in the petshop said turtles but I can only really find stuff about sliders online. Also, I'm hoping to either get two females or a male and a female - how big should my tank be? The man in the petshop showed us one with a filter, light and heater, but that was when I was only going to get one, and it was the smallest one they had at about 24" deep. I suppose I could get a bigger tank when they grew up, but I don't want it to cost too much.

ANSWER: No there is no difference both are Yellow Bellied Sliders.

Pet stores usually know very little about any animal they are selling.

Females get very large between 8"-13" males 5 to 8" long although I have only ever seen one 5" male.

This is a care sheet to a Red Ear Slider their care is identical. http://austinsturtlepage.com/Care/caresheet-red_ear_slider.htm

Those kits are useless when it comes to turtle. I would just buy their adult tank now so you don't have to keep upgrading. 2 Females will need 187 gallons of water minimum. I would never house a male and a female since males are very sexually aggressive as adults and will torment the female.

You don't want to go with the smallest tank possible you want the largest tank possible.

The filter needs to be rated 2-3x more than the filter. For example a 75 gallon tank (suitable for 1 male Yellow Bellied Slider) you would need a filter made for a 150 gallon tank or a 225 gallon tank. Turtles are extremely messy.
