QuestionI have recently aquired a painted turtle from someone who could no longer take care of her. I have very little knowledge of turtles and am trying to provide the best setup. I was advised that large rubbermaid totes work better than aquariums as they provide more space and surface area. Do you have any experience/knowledge on these types of setups. I am concerned as to how I can heat the tank and provide a basking area. Due to the plastic I am concerned about heaters and heat lamps burning. Also, what type of filter would you suggest?
Any advice or suggestions would be great.
AnswerI am sorry for the delay we just moved I am again sorry for the delay
As far as a set up, I do not recommend a rubber made bin as they do not have enough room nor are they able to safely hold heat lights, heat emmitters etc.
It can pose the risk of fire.
I prefer outdoor ponds IF you can set one up.
Should you have to use either a tank or a bin, I would recommend a tank 55 gal or so. the bigger the better. as far as a basking area, I would use gravel built up on one side of the tank that takes the basking area over the water level. then add lights over it which provides a heat area aka basking area.
I honestly recommend against the rubber type set ups. tehy can catch fire espically if the light falls in.
I prefer the outdoor ponds and can help you with setting one up almost free!
please let me know how else i can help
