Yellow Bellied Slider - Sheeding skin

Question
I have a 3 month old Yellow Bellied Slider, who eats a varied diet of veg, meat and turtle pellets, he has a basking spot with correct lighting and his water is cleaned every week and a half. For the past week his skin on his tail, legs and head has started to shred - is this normal?? He is not acting strange and is eating properly.

Answer
Shedding skin is normal, but if it looks excessive, shaggy, or seems to last for very long, it may be due to stress.

Some possible sources of stress might include:

Soiled water is a common factor- is yours filtered, or just changed? Constant filtration with a BIG filter is much healthier for young turtles.

Proper lighting- does this include UVB rays from a bulb that clearly states that it provides UVB rays?

Good water temps fo about 75-80F?

You can review the cares at a couple of great sites-
- http://www.redearslider.com

This can help you determine of there are any glitches in the diet, cares, temps, etc. that you can deal with.

However- remember that shedding IS normal!
