Question
hi i aquired a horsefield tortoise 2 days ago from a rescue centre. she originally was rescued from a breeder who had neglected her she was put on antibiotics to clear an eye infection but their is still a layer of skin covering the eyes so as it stands she is blind, her shell isnt as smooth as it should be presumably due to neglect. she weighs 74grammes and is nearly two years old-is that small???
iv given her daily baths as my worry is she needs rehydrating but as of yet i havnt seen her urinate or defacate. the rescue place were force feeding her 2 pellets twice a day surely that isnt enough. she will not open her mouth on her own-surely their is a way of tempting her to to hand feed rather than having to hold her head and physically opening her mouth for her???? she only tends to move when having a bath. the rescue place had the basking bulb on 78f day and night where as i thought its meant to be 90f in the day and 70-75f at the night-apparently she has seen a vet and the vet said everything that the rescue centre was doing was fine i have booked her in to see my vet but cant get an appointment for 5 days. so any advice would be greatly received thank you mandy

Answer
Hello thank you for rescuing her.

Please soak her in luke warm water. They do not necessarily urinate daily and odds are she will when she is secure in knowing that she will have access to more water. Id offer greens like collards to her enclosure. If you can please get her records fromt he vet to take to your vet.
This will save you financiallt as well and prevent undue testing .

Thank you again for rescuing such a beautiful species
