Answer
Hi Felicia,

Pet stores don't usually give very good information on turtle care.  They need a better diet than just commercial food.  Basic care includes a tank with ample swimming and basking room, a basking temperature of about 90 degrees with a UVB source, water temperature about 78 degrees, good filtration, and a varied diet that includes plant and animal matter.  Hatchlings typically are more carnivorous than adults, so try things like boiled chicken/shrimp/egg, worms, small crickets, mealworms, etc., along with leafy greens such as turnip and dandelion, mustard, collards, kale, and spring mix.  You can also feed a commercial pellet along with other foods, but don't rely on any one thing.  Variety is the key.  Put a cuttlebone in the water for extra calcium.  Check your temperatures and make sure they're correct.  Turtles won't eat if they're too warm or cool.

Turtles don't need the companionship of other turtles.  They bask communally because good basking areas are limited, but they don't get lonely if other turtles aren't around.
