Question
My turtle is over 3 years old and I have always takin very care of her. Wondering why her shell is excessively peeling, in large pieces and constant over the last week, week and a half? Please get back to me about this, thank you so much.

Answer
Shedding has 4 basic causes...

If the sheds are paper-thin and translucent, and the tissue underneath is healthy, then the causes can be...

1. Normal growth if the sheds occur in small bits and are almost unnoticed normally.

2. Too fast growth if it the sheds are still mostly small bits, but are more visible, happening all over.

3. Stress of the sheds are bigger or more visible. It can be hard to tell if it is #2 or 3 in many cases.

If the sheds are thick or the tissue underneath is unhealthy, then...

4. The shedding is based on shell rot, fungus, or other problems.

One of the problems we have with turtles is that something can be wrong for a very long time before it shows up in odd ways. I do not KNOW what is causing the shedding, but I suggest reviewing the basic cares at a good care site like http://www.redearslider.com and see if your housing, cares, and diet are solid.

If that does not help, I'd post the question at a place like http://www.turtleforum.com where you can discuss it with several experts at once.

Good luck!
