soft shelled turtle

Question
  well... is it natural for a soft shelled turtle to have spots? and we do have it in cold water... i heard that it develops fungus... we haven't been giving it sunlight.
oh and how can you tell the differences between male and female?

As it says in my profile, I don't do water turtle questions. I do know that soft-shells are considered difficult turtles to raise correctly and need special cares to prevent fungus and other shell conditions.
