Question
hi  my mom was just driving and we saw a turtle and i wanna know what kind of turtle is it and if i can keep it or not? i will send a pic when you tell me too

Answer
Hi Chris,

If you post back with a very clear picture of the turtle attached (take the picture from the side, and make sure the head is clearly visible), I can try to ID it for you.  You shouldn't keep it, though.  Wild turtles belong in the wild so they can reproduce and help to ensure the survival of the species.  Collection from individuals and for the pet trade has decimated many native North American species.  In addition, it is *illegal in New Jersey* to collect any species of turtle from the wild.  The department of wildlife is pretty serious about preserving the native species, so the fines for possession are steep.  The turtle should be released in the same area where you found it.  If it was in a dangerous area (such as in a developed area with many roads) contact a wildlife rehabber for advice on where to release it.
