heating lamp for freshwater turtle and behaviour

Question
i recently have a baby red ear slider. i put him in an aquarium 60x30x39cm with shallow water about 15cm height (i don't know how much gallon is that). there is a dry basking place, basking place with a shallow water (1 cm), and a deep water for him to swim. i also put two little fish in the water and put a hiding place for the turtle

i feed him one a day in the morning with pellets in another place (pet carrier)

i am still trying to find a heating lamp but i was confused.

i only find a 50watt reptile lamp (contains UVA if i was not mistaken)...will it be too hot for a baby RES?or do you have any other suggestion about the basking lamp? how much is the perfect watt for baby RES?

and about his behavior...my RES tends to spend almost his day in deep water.i've tried to put him in basking area, but he doesn't seem to like it and swim away.he even sleeps in the bottom of the aquarium.but last time i checked he seems healthy and no sign of sickness appeared.should i be worried about it? because as far as i know fresh water turtle love basking...

is it because the color? because the basking area was made from a bright color tile (off white color)

thank you for the answer

Answer
Let me answer this a bit differently...

Turtles want three things to be happy:

1. Good water-
- Lots of it (10 gallons per inch of shell length)
- Warmed to 75-80F with good water heaters
- Cleaned with a good filter, rated about 2-3 times bigger than the tank.

2. Good sun-
- Good basking site- usually a log, ramp, dock, etc. Try to avoid piles of gravel or rocks.
- Heat the basking site to about 90F- the kind of bulb is less inmportant that the temp, and that it be far enough away to prevent burns
- Lighting the tank nicely, but allowing shadows for hiding
- UVB lighting is helpful, but UVA does nothing for turtles

3. Good food- aim for about 1/2 good brand pellets and 1/2 live or frozen/thawed 'fish food' like worms, shrimp, insects, beef heart, etc.

You can find more care info at http://www.redearslider.com or http://www.tortoisetrust.org

Your turtle is trying to find a good place in the tank. My guess is that the other tank temps are too hot or cold for it to be happy.

They like to bask- but they also like to swim and move about in lots of water.

Good luck!
