i line my turtle pen in cedar and pine shaving is that bad for a box turtle. it very expense to buy store bedding when you have to drive 30 miles to a pet store. all around my house is manure dirt and grass.

You have the perfect substrate in your own yard!   Get dirt, leaves, grass and make him the best enclosure ever!  They need those items to help remain healthy, you can put worms etc in the dirt, they live until it gets ate.

The turtle will be happy healthy and it is no cost to you as nature provides it all free!!!  

As to what youre using now, that it toxic to the turtle and should not be used. Please go natual and enjoy..,...
