Question
I have had a male Mississippi Map Turtle now for about 3 years, and finally decided to get him a friend.  So yesterday I got him a Red Ear Slider friend, and they really got along great!  No hissing, no fighting over food, just great playful nature!  And then later last night I realized that the Red Ear Slider is actually a female!  I am worried that it might be possible for my Mississippi Map turtle and my Red Ear Slider to have babies...  Is this at all possible?  And if it is, besides giving one of them up, is there any way to prevent this from happening?  I just don't have the time, room, or money to raise baby turtles properly as a college student.  Thank you for any help you could give me!

Answer
1. Not possible biologically. They are different genera- too unrelated to lay eggs- but if they do, they will almost certainly be infertile.

2. Not likely anyway. Typical home set-ups are not usually appropriate for egg-laying since we have a hard time offering the moms their choice of nesting sites.
