QuestionI had a red foot years ago and I kept him inside only because I was young and lived in an apartment. I really want to get back into them and would like to keep them outside.I know they do well in humid areas, I live in south Louisiana and I wanted to know if they would do well here. I have a large back yard with plenty of room for a good size pin. Also, what kind of things could I plant for them to eat and use as shade spots?
AnswerThey love humidity and warmth- a Red-foot at 95% humidity in 85-88F temps is happy!
Hostas and ferns make good shade, as do low bushes. Food can be any of dozens of plants, like this list: http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/plantfoods.html
For cares, the best info is in a book called "South American Tortoises" by Vinke and Vetter, but it is a bit costly.
