Question

Red ear slider
red ear slider about 9 mos. 20 gal fish tank, 6 in water, 74 degree water temp, uvb lighting  spot I feed it frozen blood worms and dried shrimp and vitiman sticks 2x a day. Last ate 5pm 1/10/10 deficated, 10pm same night. Bought off a vendor.

What could the flaky substance be that I see on his neck and legs. He closes up whe I have him out so I cant really get a good look at it but when he is in the water you see it hanging on to him and floating around. It seems to be getting more and more over the last few days.

Answer
Sounds like normal shedding. If it appears continual or wide spread, it may indicate fungal or bacterial infection of the dermis/contamination in the tank or a toxic exposure. You did not state if filtration was used. Use caution with dried shrimp in the diet due to excessive thiaminase. Use as many fresh quality foods as possible.
