Florida Garter snake

Question
Hi Paul, I am asking this question on behalf of my nine yr old nephew. I bought him a Florida Garter snake approx a year ago and she is eating, shedding and behaving normally but the other day i was handling her and i noticed a really small yellow colored scab on her lower Jaw were her tongue leaves her mouth. She is very small so the wound looks tiny. I have a few reptiles myself (Chameleon, Beardie etc) and have seen alot of documentaries describe Jaw rot in reptiles so I'm a bit worried. We will bring her the vet if needed but un-fortunately our "Local" reptile vet is approx 1hr away and is not very convenient. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks you in advance
Stacey

Answer
The only type of "sores" that I've encountered before were due to the cage environment being too wet, and those occurred over the body of the snake, not just the mouth. So yours sounds like an injury or else some type of mouth rot like you suspected. I would play it safe and seek out the reptile vet. Your other option is to see if it heals with the next shed or two. However, reptiles tend to go downhill quickly when sick and not treated so that's why I would see the vet.
Good Luck!
Paul
