Shedding problem. Please help...

Question
Hi,
I am the proud owner of a corn snake. She is just over a year old. The problem I have is that when my snake shedded her skin last night I noticed that she had injured herself on the top of her head (next to her left eye). This is not an excessive injury, it looks like a small part (no bigger then half an inch) of her NEW skin has come away. It does not look sore and does not seem to be causing her any discomfort, however I have heard that this can become infected and this causes great concern to me as the injury is next to her left eye. Please could you offer me any advice as my local reptile specialist is away for a few days...
                       Many thanks, Eddie.

Answer
Hi Eddie
This is a good question as many reptile owners often overreact or under react when an injury occurs. Treatment is straight forward. Get some generic triple antibiotic ointment and apply it liberally twice or three times per day. It should heal up in 3 to 4 weeks. If you see any signs of infection (puffiness, etc...) go ahead and take him to the vet. Make sure you also clean his cage every day and change his water every day or two.
