tiger salamander

Question
I live in northern Wyoming and have found a tiger salamander in our window well. It's November and the temps are teens to 40's. We have provided a pile of leaves for him. He seems to go under them at night but he continues to crawl out from under them during the day and tries to get out of window well. I have managed to find a few worms but he isn't interested in eating or is too cold to do so.  We have snow on the ground. I am afraid if I get him out of window well and turn him loose he wouldn't stand a chance. What should I do?  Leave him in the window well?

Answer
Julie,     You need to take him to a water source. Preferably something with no or few predatory fish. A marsh would be perfect. Here is some information on him
If you decide you want to keep him....I have to let you know these guys are illegal to take out of the wild. That said, Salamanders are pretty easy to keep. Watch handling them because they do carry bacteria. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling them. I keep mine on potting soil with abit of bark on top and make sure your soil is deep enough for them to burrow they love it.    http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/salamanders/a/tigersalamander.htm   Good Luck, Tina
