Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a baby bearded dragon. I'm not sure how many weeks it is. It's about 5 inches long.I've had it about a month and a half. Last night I noticed that he had a lump on his back right between the back legs. It looked like it was having a little touble with back legs.. A few hours later another lump was forming on the upper part of his back by his neck.So when i woke up this morning I looked at him and when it tryed to move I noticed he was dragging his back legs.. Its paralized he can't move his back legs at all and has two lumps on his back...Oh, One more thing befor the lumps started it used to twich its legs. All of them.. Hope you can help me figure out what is wrong.

Thank You Tiffany  Kelly

ANSWER:   Hi Tiffany,

I feel that you should get that baby to a good reptile veterinarian on an emergency basis right away.  This is the second beardie I have heard of that had "lumps".  The other poor baby passed, and if this condition is new, having a vet diagnose and treat right away will not only help your baby but any other beardie that comes down with this.  Please get him to his vet right away.

QUESTION: Well thanks for responding.I took him back to the store I got him from and they told me that its a bone disorder. He probly was born with it.He also said that the only other way that a bearded dragon would get this bone disorder is if it wasn't getting enough calcium and vitamins that Bearded dragon needs when there that small. Which I know that my Bearded Dragon had to of been born with it cause I give him all the calcium and vitamins he needs. I also wanted to tell you, If you ever get a question asking why dose my Bearded dragon legs twich? Thats the first stages of the bone disoder. So if that happens it means he's not getting enough vitamins and calcium. I didn't find out about the twiching till it was too late. Now he's got it and I'm trying my best to try and save him. Again thanks for responding to my question and i hope you use this info i given you to help other bearded dragons... thanks agian Tiffany

Answer
I do know about Metabolic Bone Disease.  It's not just not getting enough calcium, it's also not having good UVB in order to metabolize the calcium.  And a tiny 5" baby that you've only had such a little while that "suddenly" had lumps overnight, does not come down with it overnight. If it truly was MBD, it meant he never ever had Calcium or corrrect UVB...not even at the breeder or the petshop.  This is why, without having all the information and without seeing the animal, when it's medical issues, the BEST advice is seeing a veterinarian.
