Newly hatched gecko eggs

Question
Hello,

I have two common house gecko eggs my son found outside.  My husband had tore down some weeds and they came tumbling out of the weeds.  I have been incubating them, and one just hatched.  I don't know what to feed him/her.  Do I let he/she go, or do I keep it for a length of time before I release it back to the wild.  Should I release the two after they both hatch?

Help!!

Thanks,

Karen

Answer
Hello Karen, it is really neat you were able to help these eggs. What an experience! Well they will be fine and able to fend for themselves in the wild. The first thing they will eat is their first shed skin. They survive on the egg yolk until the shed. They eat the shed then after that is when they start to hunt for bugs. So until you see a shed don't feed them anything. You can let him/her go and let him survive by himself and he should be totally capable. If you want you can keep him for some time longer. And sense he was captive hatched you could be able to raise him in a tank yourself. House Geckos don't get very large. So its up to you, keep it for a while, keep it forever, or release it now. There really isn't a wrong thing to do here. So talk about it amongst your son and husband and whoever else in your household that has been in with this and see what you guys would like to do. Good luck, and I hope the other one hatches soon!
