alligator lizard shedding w/mites

Question
QUESTION: I found an alligator lizard a few month ago. He is doing very good, just found a few mites on him and he just started shedding. I purchased this product called mite off by zoomed. It tells me to treat the whole enclosure and the lizard. Which I did, my question is will this be sufficient enough for my lizard or should i immerse him in a water bath as well for the mite issue? Should I be doing anything in his habitat to make it easier for him? His enclosure does have the fake grass and he has a few med size sticks that he rubs under/against.  Also I have a heat lamp on him, should I invest in any other lighting for heat. I keep it on pretty much all the time and I feel that he does not get his so called "down time". He does have a coconut shell that he goes in for refuge, but not sure if I should do anything else for him, and oh his name is Fred.:)
Thnx

ANSWER: While treating for mites there should be as little cage furniture as possible and usually Iuse newspaper as substrate so I can throw it away daily and just spray down the enclosue or use cage carpet and spray that as well as under it.  You should only leave his lights on during the day.  If you continue to see mites after a few days spray down the tank with equoate beddign spray from wal-mart just spray the tank down without the lizard in it wait about 30 minutes to an hour and return him to the cage and that should kill all the eggs.

QUESTION: Thank you for the advise on the mites and the lighting questions. I will look for the equoate bedding spray @ walmart. I do have a few more other questions that I would like to ask about. My first question is what do you think about mineral sand as for bedding? I just came back from our local pet store and purchased mineral sand. It states that it is good for lizards and that it helps keep mites away. Is this good for Fred? My other question is, if I should purchase a uvb lamp for him as well and if I can keep this on pretty much most of the time? And he looks great after he shedded all of his skin!

Thnx 2x

Answer
To answer your question about sand I've never kept an alligator lizard on sand though there are a few different species referred to as alligator lizards.  I believe most of those species come from areas with sandy soil not just straight sand.  You could always try it and see how he does on it but personally I think it would probably be a little arid.

As for uvb lamp yeah uvb is always recommended for lizards but no you shouldn't keep it on all the time all animals need some sort of light cycle of night and day.
