Question
I have a 6 year old bearded dragon, he is in a 6o gallon tank with shelf paper as substrate, humidity n/a, bask 100F, coil UVB, vet n/a, he is very picky and will only eat crickets, corn, peas, green beans, and sometimes dandalions. He eat everyday at 4, use repti calcium powder on food, ate a week 1/2 ago, defecated about a week 1/2 ago, captive bred, started to sheding in the month of march- April.

My question is that he hasn't defecated and won't eat for about a week and half now. I'm from Ohio so we have just recently started to get warmer weather. He usually eats pretty well for me and defecates atleast twice a week. All he wants to do is sleep, although he will become active when I take him out of his gage. I have only had him for 7 months and was not very healthy when I received him from previous owners. Within a few weeks of my care he became active, ate , and, and defecated. Is it a trend that beardies go through or should I be concerned of his lack of appetite? Sometime he will even close is eyes when I try to hand feed him.

  Thank for your help

Answer
Hello Bekah,

I would first get rid of the coil UVB light.  What brand is it?  How long have you had the coil bulb?  They do not put out much UVB light & they degrade quickly.
I recommend getting a Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb they are much better & easier on their eyes.  How often do you use the repcal calcium?  At 6 he still needs calcium 2-3 times per week.
The lack of UVB can cause lethargic behavior as well.  He can't absorb calcium properly without good UVB lighting.  He would become alot more active if he had a better UVB light.
What type of feeders & veggies do you feed him?  Is he hydrated?
What type of basking light do you use & what are your temps for him?
