what would cause my geckos tail to come off completely?

Answer
 A gecko, like very many other reptile species will "drop" a tail if frightened by what they would perceive as a predator.  The tail grows back, but not as nice as the original.  If there was no possibility of a predator, then it may be due to disease and the animal should see a vet immediately.
