Question
Hi, iv got two female leopard geckos, and had a male, until he passed away. I kept them seperate from male, and introduced a female once. iv just had the 4th baby to hatch from 2nd clutch, and have 4 more eggs from her incubating. How many eggs do they lay after one mating? and the other female is laying aswell, but unfertile, is this normal for them to lay aswell?
Many thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Gary, How nice that you will have a living legacy from your deceased male. Most female reptiles store sperm from a single mating and use it to fertilize all their eggs for that laying season. Some species, like box turtles, can store sperm for several years! A healthy female leo in her breeding prime can produce around 10 clutches (of 2 eggs each) but 5 or 6 clutches is more the average. Un-mated female reptiles will sometimes produce eggs as well, this is quite common in iguanas.
Just make sure that your female is very well supplemented with calcium to replenish what she has lost in producing the eggs.
