Question
QUESTION: Hi Pam,

My adult male leo seems to be enlarged in his reporductive area.  the bulges that idicate he is male seems to have doubled or more in size...could this be a serious condition...?
I am about to call a vet, but also wanted to get some insight on the situation in advance as well. thanks!

ANSWER:   Any unusual swellings should be checked by a vet, your instincts are correct.  But without a good photo it could be anything from infection to a prolapse. Even the very odd chance that he may have been mis-sexed and your leo is female and carrying eggs!  So follow your gut feeling and get him to a vet if you haven't already done so.

QUESTION: Thank you very much, your answer is appreciated very much/

We took him to the vet this weekend, and they actually treated his eyes and gave me some terramycin for the eye infection that he has had for a while....I did not mention the eye issues in my previous question, but I hope the eye infection did not spread to the bulges?  At the time, the Dr. was not too familiar with the buldges swelling but was going to check with the very knowledgeable technician.  I will call them today to see if they have any more info for me regarding prolapse or infection perhaps.  He tried mating with the girls a lot this past breeding season, but it seemes as if his "parts" did not come "out" of his bulges like they used to do...(last season I saw him mate with the female.).  This season, no eggs at all- so not sure if the mating never took place or if the female is getting older...do you happen to know at what age they stop breeding, too?

ANSWER:   Hehe, they may slow down with age, but no male ever stops trying to breed if healthy.  I do suspect those bulges and I do hope you get a proper answer.  Since he did mate the year before, I just hope the hemipenes retracted back normally or that could be the problem and they are what is causing the swelling.  Like the cloaca, the hemipenes can also prolapse, but since they are in the body, I would have a vet or the knowledgable tech check for inflamation in that organ.

QUESTION: Hi Pam,

thank you again for th info.  I am a little worried.  The tech and vet said to keep an eye on it for now.  it did not seem problematic duing our vet visit, but i was told to keep an eye on it.  I have been told the buldges seems a little bit more firm in comparison to another male leo that the tech has.

Answer
I would do what they say, but keep after them to consult other vets, have them call the University of Georgia vet school, or University of Florida, or the University of Michigan.  You can watch, but they should be getting to the bottom of the problem.
