QuestionWe were recently given a leopard gecko for free. We were told he had everything he needed but as soon as I saw the set up I knew that wasn't true because they had no heat source. This is our first reptile, but I had never heard of one not needing heat of some kind.
I have gotten him a uth to start, but I'm worried about how to go about it. If I put him elsewhere while I warm the tank and make sure it's not too hot then put him in will it be a shock after so long living in lower temps? But on the other hand I wouldn't want to accidentally overheat him him. :/
The tank is a ten gallon and I'm also worried that a light bulb might over heat the small tank. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on but I didn't find anything on this specifically. Are there smaller lower heat bulbs good for this? Will the uth be enough?
AnswerHello Wendy,
A leopard gecko most certainly needs a couple of heat sources actually.
The best one is what you have, an undertank heater. Then, use a low wattage basking light on the same side that you have the UTH on to create a basking spot of around 88-90 for him. Do you have a way of measuring his temperatures?
Just use like a 20-30 wattage light bulb, just a household lightbulb will be perfectly acceptable. :-))
It may take him a little while to adjust to the heating, but he will enjoy it. Just make sure you have a little water dish in there for him.
