Lizard Possibly Choking

Question
Hi!
Thank you for taking your valuable time to help people. This means a lot to us, I hope you realize how much of an impact you have on people's lives. As an animal lover, I'm sure you know how much people's pets mean to them.

Anyway, I have a Texas Tree Lizard that is about 3 or 4 inches long without the tail. I have had him for months and he has eaten a number of very large meal worms, though I do try to feed him average sized worms.

The other day, it had a worm so big that it had to bite down 6 times! Is that a bad thing?

Today the lizard seemed to have a little bit of trouble getting a larvae down. I had never seen him with a larvae in his mouth this long. He took a bite right in the middle of the worm, and it was sticking out evenly on both sides. I am thinking that maybe he just took a bite from a bad position. The worm seemed to be stuck in his mouth with his head out of one end and the tail out of the other for a minute. The lizard started shaking his head a little bit, like a dog would. He eventually did get it down, is this anything to worry about?

Thank you for all of your expert advice!

Sincerely,
Jared Mink

Answer
If after that one worm, every insect he eats takes a while to get down, I would wonder if he had a partial foreign body obstruction.  If it does continue, get him to a good reptile vet who can safely clear a possible obstruction.  If he is eating normally now, there is probably nothing to be concerned about.  I have seen lizards grab a full grown hornworm and take a while to get it down with the same result as a smaller insect, the happy lizard licking his chops.
