Question
I have a leopard gecko named Sammy and i was thinking about changing up his diet a little bit. I only feed him crickets, ive tried giving him mealworms and he never ate them which im thankful for now since i heard their bad for geckos, anyway what is a good insect i can give him for a treat once in a while?

Answer
Hi Sarah, It's a good decision to start adding variety to Sammy's diet. The different feeder insects all have different levels of fats, proteins and minerals. You will achieve a better balance of nutrition by giving a variety. Mealworms are not completely evil and certainly can be offerred as part of the diet. Feeding large amounts or feeding only mealworms should be avoided. Waxworms are a small, high fat moth larva that most reptiles love. They would make a good occasional treat. Silkworms are another option, they are quite nutritious and can be fed fairly regularly. The adult ones may be a bit large for Sammy but you should be able to buy smaller ones. Both waxworms and silkworms should be available at the larger stores that sell reptile feeders.
