Babys biteing tails

Question
QUESTION: Hey Tracie, I have three baby bearded dragons over a month old and the bigger of the three has bitten the tails of the other two and has left two bite marks on the smallest one which isn't too severe and on the other has literally chewed on it. It is bad looking and it seems like he has no control to that end of it. what should i do? Separate the bigger one from both? take the baby with the worse injury to the vet? Or what?

ANSWER: Hello Joey,

Yes, separate the larger one from the other 2.
You will need to treat the other one's wounds with antibiotic ointment, daily.  However that may not be enough, as the areas will most likely become necrotic.  It usually happens when one has been bitten.  It is possible it will need to be partially amputated.

Are you giving them plenty of food, & leaving veggies & greens in the tank?  Babies are always hungry.  Do you supplement with calcium then?  They need a good calcium dusting once daily, 5 times a week.

What about UVB lighting?  What type & brand of UVB do you use, a fluorescent tube bulb or a compact/coil light?

Are the other 2 smaller ones picking on each other?  If they are the same size, then you can leave them together but the larger one has got to be put in another tank immediately.  So you will need another UVB light as well.

Let me know how he is doing.  He will probably need to see a vet.

QUESTION: Right now i have separated the bigger one, i have proper UVB and i feed the babies enough everyday. the other two are fine together but it may be another day before i can get antibiotics. the one baby without a serious injury seems to be fine, his tail seems to be healing up quite nicely. the other one is acting fine and eating. But the end of what is left is just there. but they both seem to be healing up just fine. I am feeding the smaller ones a bit more now to increase their size. If they show growth i will put them all back together and see if they act fine.

Answer
Hello Joey,

Which brand of UVB are you using?  Is it a tube bulb or a compact/coil light?
It is not a good idea to put them back in together.  Eventually, they will all need to be separated most likely especially if you have 2 males together, or a male & a female.  If they are from the same clutch, you don't want inbreeding.  Most of the time, housing more than 1 together ends in disaster.
Continue to put antibiotic ointment on the injured areas & keep it as clean as possible to try & avoid infection.

Babies need to be fed at least 3 times per day, as well as leaving greens & veggies in the tank for them as well.
Keep me posted on them.
