Question
i have a gecko he is about 3 1/2 years old. he had always been a healthy and active gecko. about 2 months ago i noticed a black out line in his eye i started to worry and my parents kept saying it was probably his age. i waited a week because i thought something would change. then i started noticing that he started to get like an eye boogie looking thing in his eye. that is when i knew something was really wrong. so i called petco and described what i noticed on my gecko. they said it was an eye irritation to change the wood chips into sand and to wait a few days and see if there was any difference. i then noticed there was no change and my gecko stopped eating. i took him to the vet 4 times!!! and the vet would always cancel on me. that was the only reptile vet that was around my area. so finally when i took my gecko and the vet took a look at him i realized one of his bottom privates looked infected the vet said it was infected. so she took off all the infected part and gave me some medication and told me that that was why his eyes were getting like that. i went home and started to give my gecko the medication the vet gave me. so i thought everything would be okay but now my gecko hasn't opened his eyes and he stopped eating. he started getting the pencil tail so i started feeding him myself with liquid food. what's wrong with my gecko?

Answer
If the eye or eyes is "oozing" then I believe there is some type eye infection.  Your original problem (the eye) was never cured by the medicine given to you by the vet was it?  If not, you need to call the vet and explain to her what you just did to me.  And... here comes the bad part, for as long as your gecko has been sick, I'm worried that he may not recover.  What type of sand do you have him on?  I would recommend you switch the plain newspaper until you clear the eye infection-that way there will be nothing to irritate the eye(s).

In the future, don't buy your animals from PetCo if at all possible.  And certainly don't ask them for advice.  They are like the Wal-mart of the Pet industry.  Just because they sell geckos doesn't mean they know ANYTHING about them.  They sell geckos so that they can sell you the tank, lid, water dish, fake plant, hide rock, crickets, crickets dust, and book that goes with it.  Find a breeder that just sells geckos!
