im not sure if my leopard gecko is sick?

Question
QUESTION: I redently got a leopard gecko two days ago, we were told he was a blizzard leopard gecko and was tannish in color. i was told he just ate the day before and i didnt need to feed him for about a week. I got him home in a ten gallon tank with heating pad, lamp, and the vitamin-fortified calcium carbonate substrate which is extra-fine milling. he has two caves one on cool side and one on warm side. But when i set him up i decided to get a half dozen crickets for him and he ate them all. He now wont come out of the cave on the cool side and the temp on the thermometer that is located on warm side is85 which shouldnt be to hot. now he hasnt come out that i noticed in two days, he is now a bluish gray color and his skin is starting to look loose, or sag a little. I dont know weither or not he is sick for the sand, or he was overfeed or what. Do you know what could be wrong?

ANSWER: Hello Delsea,

Well, one thing, he is probably having some relocation stress which is normal & usually lasts around 1-2 weeks.
What type of thermometer are you using, a stick on type, a digital probe or a temp gun?
He does need a basking spot or hot spot or around 88-90 & the cooler end should be around 80 or so.
Is the hide/cave moist & humid to help with shedding?
The only thing I would suggest is to be very careful with the sand, because it is calcium based sand, & will cause impaction problems.  It clumps up when it gets wet, & will cause terrible impactions.
I would give him a little bit of time to get adjusted to a new home.  Have you tried to handle him yet?  Has he drank any water yet?

QUESTION: The thermometer is a stick on type. im aware of the clumping of the sand and am being very cautious with it. im not sure if the hide is moist and humid...how can i determine that? i take him out and handle him every day since ive had him just to make sure hes still moving around ok. Im not to sure if he has been drinkin any water, the first day he was laying in it though.

Answer
Hello Delsea,

What do you have in the hide/cave?  Just get some spaghmum moss to put in the hide/cave & keep it moist daily.  Make sure it on top of the undertank heater.
Good that you are handling him daily.  Start with short sessions, then build up in time with him so he can get adjusted to everything.
The stick on type of thermometer will only measure the humidity & ambient temps, but not the basking spot or hot spot.  If possible, try to get a digital probe or a temp gun to double check the temperatures.
Let me know how he is doing.
