AnswerHi Aja, Respiratory infections in reptiles often produce mucous as well. You may see it as bubbles or clear liquid around the nostrils. In severe infections the animal may resort to open mouth breathing and you can sometimes see strands of mucous in the mouth. If the infection is deeper down in the lungs you may not be able to see the mucous but you can hear it. There will be a rasping or clicking sound as they breath.
These symptoms would usually be accompanied by laboured breathing, reduced activity and a severe drop in appetite as well. If you saw just once incident of heavier then normal breathing it may just have been induced by a momentary stress.
Respiratory infections are not that common in geckos unless they have been subjected to a prolonged cool and damp environment. Being housed on a very dusty substrate can cause repiratory irritation which can mimic an infection.
