Question
What do breeders use to control fleas and ticks without spending a fortune?

Answer
Hi
I use a combination of things to keep flys down. I hang fly ribbons around my barn especially near the door way. These are very cheap- 4 ribbons for $1 usually. Change them as they get full.

I use vinegar in the water once a week to help keep down the smell in the barn. Vinegar lessens the amonia smell of the urine. Just ad about 1 tablespoon per gallon used of apple cider vinegar.

Also keep pens clean, scrub the pens once every 3-4 months to get rid of feces, fur, and urine build up. Clean dropping pans at least once a week, and if using pan free cages-such as outdoor hutches or just scooping droppings from the ground- i clean these 4 times a year if out doors, and indoors about once every 2 weeks.

We also get low cost fly spray- Get this at local feed stores. It is made to spray on horses and dogs, but we don't spray the rabbits with it, just mist it around the cages underneath and above just make sure not to get it in the water.

Our major prevention is just keeping pens extra clean. Minimize food given to rabbits just to the amount they eat to prevent wasting, and if possible use water bottles so that the rabbits aren't spilling water creating dampness to harbor smell.
