Sores on mouth and nose

Question

Baby Bunny
About two months ago I bought a mother rabbit and her month old kit. And in the past month I've started to notice dandruff type stuff on the mother's ears and it spread to the baby, too. I figured out that it was ear mites and thought that it was also ear mites spreading to the nose when I noticed sores and scabbing on the nose, but now both mother and baby have completely lost all hair on their noses, it's all scabbed over. The baby's is the worst,  it almost looks like her nose is falling off and now there are sores spreading all around her mouth. I noticed that both rabbits had sore hocks so I've bleached out their cages and put perching pads in them. The mother's feet seem to be getting better, but the baby's isn't. It seems that every day her feet are just getting more deformed. Please help! I love my bunnies but don't have enough money to take them to the vet.

Answer
Hi,

it almost looks like some of the fungal problems or warts I have seen on wild rabbits.

If you have any natural salves or ointments for skin you might try that on the baby's sore hocks.  I can't tell you if they are safe for rabbits.  You could try to gently wrap the rear hocks with a pet medical bandage wrap, so that the skin has a little buffer between it and the floor.  You can't wrap too tightly otherwise blood flow could be a problem.

Otherwise it could be something they could recover from if they had the right antibiotics.  There really isn't anything I'd recommend other than getting vet care for this rather serious infestation.  Perhaps if you could just talk to the vets around you and see if they could recommend anything that would be helpful that isn't prescription, that might be a possibility.

Maybe you can set up a payment plan with a vet that would help you.  Or do work for them, or look at your budget and find the money cutting out something non-essential for the rabbbit care.  Maybe sell some things you don't use anymore. I have done several of these things to free up funds for rabbit care.  Good luck, I will pray for you and your bunnies.
