unknown reason for death of rabbit

Question
Our rabbit, Fudge died this morning and we are trying to understand why. Fudge was 5yrs old and lived in a hutch in the garden, running free during the day, we believe she may have been impregnated approx a month ago and have been looking for signs of pregnancy. Last night she was very lethargic and stayed in her hutch. This morning she was in the same position and I noticed blood around her rear and she was breathing badly. As I tried to look at her more closely she stopped breathing. Do you think the pregnancy(not confirmed) could have been what killed her or possibly another reason? thank you

Answer
Hi Paul,

sorry to hear about your rabbit passing.

There's no real way to tell you why, a vet would have to do an examination of him to determine a cause of death.  Your hunch about the pregnancy could be confirmed by a vet necropsy.  She could have had a difficult birth, yes, it is possible.  Five years old is rather old for a rabbit to have a litter, so there may have been complications.  Her being an outdoor hutch rabbit can add in other factors that an indoor house rabbit wouldn't have had.

Again, sorry about your girl.  If you're a Christian like me, you can take comfort in the fact God loves ALL life, he loves your bunny, and one day she will be back with you.
