Question
hi i recently adopted 2 hotots. now i sexed them as i was told they were a male and female. they were housed seperate. anyhow. they are male and female. how do i know if the female is spayed? is there a way to tell? also on the male -he had no scrotum. now that means he is fixed right? i put them 2geather for company and 3 days later (not right away) he starts mounting her. is that normal for a fixed male? also i had a another buck near the hotots cage(about 2 ft away) -he is by himself as he is a nz intact -he is in his own cage )he shows no interest in the little female hotot so does that mean she is spayed? id really like to know for sure if these fixed/spayed. the former owners had no clue.

Answer
Hi Kim,

a spayed female - you may still be able to see a tummy incision line, or that the fur was shaved and is still not the same length as the rest of her belly fur.

A male should still have skin left (scrotal sac skin) but there should not be anything in them.  Now males can pull up their testicles when they want to so if he is still intact it could be possible that you looked when they were up.

The best place to go is to a vet and have them look them over, and confirm they see surgical incisions from the procedures.

If the former owners have no clue, they probably are not fixed.  That means you probably will have a litter on the way because you stuck the male and female together.

And yes, fixed or not, rabbits will mount other rabbits.

You really need to get to a vet and get them looked over for health issues and a checkup, and ask about the whole spay/neuter thing and what your options are.

To find a good rabbit vet in your area, go to:

Not every vet is a good rabbit vet, that's why this page is useful.
