Question
I had my bunny spayed on Thursday and she was doing fine but yesterday she started itching all over and I can't find anything on her skin no flakes or anything. I was wondering if maybe this was a reaction to the isoflurene they used to sedate her for the surgery. I called my Vet's office but he wasn't in today and the vet tech just told me she was fine if she was eating and drinking okay (which she is). Is this something I should be worried about? Is she having an allergic reaction? Please help!!!
Thank you for your time,
Amanda Graham

Answer
Dear Amanda,

It's not likely that she's having a reaction to the isoflurane.  My first thought was that she might have picked up mites or fleas at the vet's office, which does happen sometimes.  It's also possible that she had a sub-clinical population of mites before, and the stress of surgery allowed them to proliferate.  It's not a major problem, but it's a nuisance.

If this is the case, then I would ask the vet about getting some Revolution (selamectin) for your bunny.  DO NOT use Frontline, as it can be deadly to rabbits.

If she's eating and drinking and pooping normally, this isn't a life-threatening emergency. But she must be miserable if she's scratching a lot, so I'd ask about the Revolution as soon as possible.

Hope this helps. Please write back if you have any other questions.
