Question
Dear Dr. Dana,

my bunny was given Ivermec(tin?) in August and then in September 2006. Today I noticed worms in his stool. I will take him to the vet on Friday. I read that Ivermec has to be given after a short period of time again. So if he is given it on February 23rd when EXACTLY should he be given it again?

The bunny weighs 1,5 kilos. Do you also know how much of it he has to be given?

Thank you for your help. The reason I'm asking is because I don't trust the vets here, they are not knowledgeable on bunnies.

Ana

Answer
Dear Ana,

It is safe for him to receive ivemectin again.   You might wish to ask about Revolution (selamectin), which is topical and lasts longer than ivermectin.  For such a small bunny, 4-6 drops on the back of the neck should do the trick.

If the bunny is being reinfected, you need to find the source of the problem and make sure the area where he keeps picking up worms is thoroughly disinfected.

You can try to find a better rabbit vet here:

Hope that helps.

Dana
