Baby thrown out of cage

Question
My "male" rabbit had a baby last night or this morning. I went out to feed and the baby was on the ground. It is still alive and I used gloves to pick it up and put it in a nest box that I made quickly this morning. Does this mean the mother does not want the baby? I really want the baby to live.

Answer
Hi There

Not necessarily. If the babies crawl out, the Mother won't put them back in the nest box herself, so keep putting him back in for her if he does get out.

I have had both situations happen, you're right, sometimes the Mum knows something isn't right and allows the kit to die. However, that isn't the case all the time. Mother rabbits won't pick up their babies usually, but there's always the exception.

Good luck with the baby... any problems or concerns don't hesitate to send an email.
